Understanding PE300, PE500, and PE1000 Engineering Plastics

Polyethylene (PE) is one of the most widely used engineering plastics thanks to its excellent chemical resistance, impact strength, and wear performance. Depending on the molecular weight, PE is categorized into different grades, the most common being PE300, PE500, and PE1000. Each grade has unique properties and is suitable for specific applications.

PE300 (HDPE – High Density Polyethylene)

  • Description:
PE300, also known as HDPE sheet, is a lightweight and cost-effective polyethylene with good chemical resistance and impact strength.

  • Key Properties:

    • Density ~0.96 g/cm³

    • Good impact resistance

    • Excellent chemical resistance

    • Lightweight and easy to machine

  • Applications:

    • Cutting boards

    • Chemical tanks and liners

    • General industrial components

PE500 (HMWPE – High Molecular Weight Polyethylene)

  • Description:
PE500 has a higher molecular weight than PE300, providing improved wear resistance and impact strength while maintaining easy machinability.

  • Key Properties:

    • Higher impact resistance compared to PE300

    • Good sliding and wear properties

    • Excellent food-grade safety (often FDA approved)

  • Applications:

    • Food processing industry (cutting boards, conveyor parts)

    • Guide rails, star wheels, and wear strips

    • Sliding profiles and machine parts

PE1000 (UHMWPE – Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene)

  • Description:
PE1000 is an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene with outstanding wear resistance, extremely high impact strength, and very low coefficient of friction. It is the premium grade of polyethylene.

  • Key Properties:

    • Exceptional abrasion and wear resistance

    • Extremely high impact strength (even at -200 °C)

    • Excellent sliding properties

    • Resistant to a wide range of chemicals

  • Applications:

    • Linings for chutes, silos, and hoppers

    • Conveyor systems and chain guides

    • Marine fender pads and dock bumpers

    • Ground protection mats and crane outrigger pads

Summary

  • PE300 (HDPE): Cost-effective, general-purpose plastic.

  • PE500 (HMWPE): Better impact and wear resistance, food-safe.

  • PE1000 (UHMWPE): Premium performance with superior wear, impact, and sliding properties

  • .

Choosing the right grade depends on the specific application. For high-wear and heavy-duty environments, PE1000 is the best option, while PE300 and PE500 are more economical for general use.
